Proteins are so important as we age. They play a big role in maintaining and creating every cell of our bodies.

Protein is a nutrient that works as a building block for muscle, bones, skin and cartilage, and helps to build and repair tissue.

Our bodies depend on Protein for basic functions such as energy, supporting our nervous system, kidneys, brain and help muscles function properly.

So how do we get the daily proteins that our bodies require? Are there pros and cons to protein supplements?

It is always best to get your protein from food sources such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, yogurt, nuts, legumes and the list goes on.

    • Make sure to check for artificial sweeteners, fructose syrup and preservatives – they can be high in carbs, fats and sugars which you do not need.
  2. May lack micronutrients
    • Most protein supplements lack the nutrients that your body needs and gets from food such as iron, zinc niacin etc.
  3. Can be expensive
    • cost of protein powder can vary in range. Be careful when buying protein supplements the cost may not be necessary or worth it.

In conclusion

Protein supplements can play a positive role with obtaining your dietary needs but you should be careful. There are pros and cons to protein supplements.
